Key career highlights
Starting out in April 1990, I began at NZ Telecom on a 4 year apprenticeship that was underwritten by BT and AT&T America. Over the next couple of years, I was fast tracked through Category 3 UTP cabling and OM1 fibre training whilst still installing IBM Type 1, Thinnet & Thicknet ethernet cabling.
In 1999 I moved to the UK, starting work as a data cabling installations team leader at Reuters in London via Whitepack Network Services. In 2004 I was tasked with the documentation of the physical routing of all incoming critical bearer circuits to Reuters DTC in London using Microsoft Visio. This documentation is signed by myself and still visible on the Reuters worldwide intranet in instances where the bearer circuit has not been relocated or upgraded. Then in 2004, I took up office-based duties with Whitepack Network Services as a Project Manager. Another notable highlight in my career to date is gaining BICSI RCDD status in 2013.
Outside of work
I have travelled extensively covering approximately 50 countries. I spent 2 months travelling China on a £50 per day budget, sometimes not seeing another western citizen for up to a week. My wife and I trekked through the Andes from Peru, through Bolivia, into Chile and down through Argentina for 4 months living in a tent and cooking on open fires and asados. We learnt to understand and communicate in basic South American Spanish. I also have an 8 handicap in golf!
What I’m looking forward to in my new role
I am looking forward to the diversity of the business that Kinetic IT is involved with, which covers far more than structured cabling. My early months in the role have already exposed me to projects involving CDM site set up, dilapidation of data centres and re-designing lighting systems – all of which are outside of what I am familiar with. The company is on an upward trend and I am excited to see where it takes me.
